Rationale

Windows 8
Preface

Microsoft Windows provides a vast amount of system information, but over time this information has become increasingly fragmented and difficult to access.

In earlier versions up to and including Windows 7, most system details were logically grouped within a single Control Panel.

Key information could typically be reached within a few clicks.

With the introduction of Windows 8, Microsoft began moving towards a touch-first interface. This resulted in system settings being split across two separate areas:

- the traditional 'Control Panel';
- the newer 'Settings interface'.
Windows 10

This split has continued through Windows 10 and Windows 11, where system information is now distributed across multiple layers, menus, and legacy dialogs.

In many cases, accessing basic technical details requires navigating several screens or knowing the exact location in advance.

peekSYS and peekLAN were created to address these problems.

Objective

Its goals are simple: to present essential system information clearly, in one place, without the need to search through multiple menus or interfaces.

Both tools are intentionally small, portable and free from unnecessary features. They do not modify the system, require installation, or collect any data.

They are designed to be a straightforward, dependable tools that restores quick access to information that should never have become difficult to find.

peekSYS
Design Principles

peekSYS and peekLAN are guided by a small set of practical principles:

Clarity over complexity
Information should be easy to read and logically grouped. No hidden panels, no layered menus, no guesswork.

Single view of the system
All key details are presented in one place. The user should not need to navigate multiple screens to build even a simple picture.

Minimal footprint
The applications are small, portable, and requires no installation. They leave no traces on the host system.

No unnecessary features
peekSYS focuses only on key system information. peekLAN focuses on being fast and reliable. Features that do not directly support these goals are deliberately omitted.

Respect for the user
No advertising, no data collection, no background activity. The tools run only when the user chooses to run them.

Consistent, readable output
Information is formatted in a clean, structured way so it can be easily scanned, copied, or shared.

Privacy Note

peekSYS and peekLAN display system information including computer names, usernames, file paths, network addresses and MAC addresses.

This information may be considered sensitive. Take care when sharing screenshots or copied reports with others.
